Putting On a Strong Face: The Struggles of Men’s Mental Health
In a world where men are often expected to be unbreakable pillars of strength, there’s a quiet battle raging beneath the surface. Behind the confident smiles and composed exteriors, many men are grappling with a silent storm—struggles with mental health that go unseen and unspoken. It’s time to look beyond the mask and shine a light on the reality of men’s mental health.
The Reality of Mental Health Issues in Men
We reside in a society where “mard ko dard nahi hota”, where men are told to man up instead of speak up. However, this is a global trend. According to research in USA, 80% of suicides are committed by men which indicates that mental disturbances exist. The mental health of men is a hidden crisis. One in five men experiences depression and anxiety, yet only a fraction seek help. This reluctance stems from deep-rooted societal norms that equate vulnerability with weakness, leaving many men silent.
The cost of ignoring men’s mental health is staggering. Men are nearly four times more likely to die through suicide than women, highlighting the deadly consequence of untreated mental health conditions. In our society men are considered deep-rooted, strong and shady trees but we forget that even a tree needs water and nutrition. Even if there is a sane one in a society of illiterates he is considered insane.
